bigbuyer's Full Review: Bose Lifestyle 30 Theater System
I am often called in to sort out problems with home theater systems. My friends get them and wonder why they don't sound as good as they did at the store. A recent visit to a certain person's house (who shall remain unknown) yielded the the Bose lifestyle system. Seems his recent encounter with the cable man resulted in a crewed-up wiring plan. He paid the cable guy to install digital cable and also hook up a DVD player. The guy really screwed up his system by incorrectly wiring the equipment. After I hooked up everything correctly I started playing with the system. I was amazed how thin the movies sounded. keep in mind the owner of the house thought it sounded great. "WOW" he said. "Thanks for fixing it up!"
Here is the truth. Bose make decent equipment. It's claim to fame is the tiny speakers mated to a small subwoofer. For such a tiny system it does not sound bad. But compare the Lifestyle to any decent ( I stress decent) bookshelf system or ever a full-size home theater system and you walk away shaking your head. Why would any spend that much money on such a poor sounding system. When you enter the showroom the speakers are set up so you bopped with perfect surround sound. When you get it home and set it up in a real-world situation, it all falls apart. Do you mount the speakers just above your head on nice black articulated rods? NOPE!
Most buyers have never head a good sound system. They are impressed by the small size of the speakers. Women seem to dig them. Until you really audition a few systems with the same movie or dvd, you'll never know what your missing. With the money you spend on this system you could get a very, very nice system that sound worlds better.
Finally, NO serious audio review really grooves on the Bose system. Audio review sites just hate the Bose deal! Bose is not bad, it is just not really great and costs too much. A lot of very wealthy people buy these because the ads promise much, seem friendly, and it has the bogus snob appeal. True audiophiles stay away from Bose. Sorry if that offends.
