After listening to a half dozen home theatre systems at all the local electronics retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.), I heard this beauty playing a DTS DVD-ROM of "Saving Private Ryan". INCREDIBLE!!! I bought it the next day (on sale!), and set up the system quickly at home. The directions were clear and the system connected well to my Panasonic DVD-ROM player easily.
The sound is great...and I've got to turn down the subwoofer to avoid rattling the drywall in our home theatre room! My wife loves the sound, too, and even though she's a real "penny-pincher", she thinks it a good investment for our entertainment.
MINOR downsides, but can be overcome for the better:
The unit does not come with a digital connector cable (none do, by the way) but DON'T waste your money on a 'optical' cable for $40+, just use a good single RCA cable. I compared both cables extensively and with different formats WITH NO AUDIBLE DIFFERENCE!
The speaker wires are thinner than I would have used, but I didn't upgrade. I did cut them to shorter equal lengths.
Only while watching TV, the subwoofer OCCASIONALLY does not "turn auto-on". A bit problematic when watching music videos and you need a good thumping bass. Does not seem to be a problem when watching HBO cable, or with DVD ROMS, as it almost always senses the sub-bass signal and engages immediately. Probably a bass signal problem from the different TV stations. But, if you turn "OFF" the subwoofer sensitivity switch for the AUTO-ON feature, then the subwoofer stays on all the time (better!), and you won't get the problem of it coming on and off.
Watching TV, the best sounding "effect" is "disco" (more bass, and better "surround" sound effect) -- the other TV effect modes sound flatter and do not give as good a surround sense, but you may like other effects, there's lots of 'em!
The remote has a ton of buttons, and is the only way to really customize the sound to really "tweak" the individual speaker settings, etc., so use the instructions to get the MAX! You can also program the remote to run your TV, VCR, DVD, etc.. nice feature. I don't even touch my other remotes any more!
Overall: A 4 of 5 rating, Great system for anyone, but with only a little room to improve.
