Overall, I find it very easy to recommend the JVC MX-MD70. It's a well-built, well-designed machine...and it looks great. But it's not without its flaws. Let's start with the pluses:
For the money ($400 from Overstock.com, Feb 2000), you won't find a more presentable machine. Everything from Sony or Aiwa in that price range looks like a cheap toy. This one is beautiful, with glass shielding and backlit LCDs. It's also well-built...not some half-empty plastic box.
All the functions are reasonably well laid-out, and the machine is pretty intuitive. You won't find too many buttons like on some machines. The large display isn't perfect, but it's far better than most comparable machines.
Unfortunately, the sound quality is not great. At 50 watts per channel, the sound is a far cry from my 60 watt, 6-year-old Aiwa shelf system. And there's no output for a subwoofer, so you're stuck with what you get. Basically, it sounds like 50 watts. If you have a large room to fill, find something with more kick and fullness.
The Minidisc player is a great feature, but it has its flaws too. For example, the machine cannot transfer CD titles (included on some CDs) onto MDs: you have to title each song individually.
All in all, it's the best MD-CD shelf system available for the $400 I paid. At the market price of $600, though, you should think about investing in a fuller component system.
