The Bottom Line: It's rugged and water-resistant making it ready for the beach, the boat, or camping.

As a boater whose boat spends it's off-duty hours on a trailer, I'm concerned about making sure I can remove all electronics so a thief won't remove them for me. I was thus hesitant to install an expensive stereo system, and was concerned about battery drain ( small alternator on my outboard motor...). My solution, bring a Sony boombox along for the ride.
We've had the Sony for three months now, and we love it. We don't have to worry about changing stations with wet hands or a little water splashing on the unit. This unit isn't waterproof though, it's just got sealed rubber buttons, plugs for all jack openings and drain channels under all top openings for the CD and tape. A really heavy rain might flood it.
We live on the Ocean ( Florida Keys ) so we do what we can to keep salt water spray off of the unit. We've seen other radios like ours that after constant salt water exposure had rust issues with the antenna and the speaker grills.
The CD player has Electronic shock protection, but it doesn't seem to take too much bouncing on the water to get a CD to skip anyway. We don't have any problem with just the boat rocking once we've come to a stop.
Alas, we haven't even used the tape player, all our music is on CD's.
The digital tuner is a nice one, with plenty of presets and good, though not outstanding, reception.
As for the sound the unit produces, well, perhaps it the sealed nature of the speakers to keep out moisture, but I think this is one of the best sounding boomboxes on the market. We chose this one much for its durability, but we would have chosen it for the sound quality too. There are several built in equalizer settings to help you tweak the sound to your liking.
Sure, really deep bass isn't going to come out of a speaker this size, but I'm happy with what I hear.
The clock built into the display can turn the unit off when you're going to sleep, or turn the unit on like a clock radio.
Overall, we're very happy with this boombox.
