This is what I wanted: a small stereo system with cassette, and CD. I also wanted a top loading CD because either I'm rough on the sliding drawer kind or I have had nothing but lousy products in the past.
This one has a glass door as the "lid" and you have to use a little weight (provided) on top of the CD so it doesn't skip, but that's not too annoying after you get used to it.
There seems to be nothing fragile or flimsy about it. It's metal and glass. Hefty.
It has a clock with an alarm. I didn't know this was useful, but I have the kind of home where people drop in fairly often (unannounced), and often stay the night. It's a one bedroom apartment, so the guests end up on an aero bed (another product i didn't know i needed til i had it) in the living room/ home office. The alarm clock is a great feature, mostly because I work at home and sleep later than my guests, who can set the alarm and wake to a CD and not miss work.
It also has auxiliary ports. Now this is a good thing. I went out and got some Radio Shack switch boxes (one for "in" and one for "out") and now run all kinds of sound through the stereo. My computer for example (which is kind of a drag because then you can't listen to music and hear the noises your computer makes at the same time... unless you're listening to MP3s on the computer, then all the sounds overlap out of the stereo together.
It has a remote control, very useful. It's a little annoying that you can't switch to aux. from the remote, since I use that a lot, but otherwise it's a good thing. You can use it like a remote control sleep button for the alarm clock.
One more really insignificant thing that made me happy: i have shelves that are 1/4 round. the curve of the stereo fits on the shelves like they were built for each other. This probably won't help you, but it made me happy. And it's a nice looking little machine, too.
The sound quality is fantastic. It's a bookshelf system, so don't expect concert quality. But it is better sound than the average small speaker provides. It does not seem to me to be tinny or have a lot of hiss or noise. It can be LOUD, the bass is strong and clear (no rumble), good definition of sounds in complex musical pieces. Friends who are professional musicians have marvelled at the sound.
All in all it's a great little stereo for a small space. And not to bad for a large space, either.
