| seanfitz's Full Review: Sony MHC-MC1 Shelf System |
I bought the MHC-MC1 after reading the reviews on Epinions. It seemed like what I was looking for and more. The promise of decent bass was really all I needed and a 50 CD changer too - wow, I don't even own 50 CDs anymore (my apartment got robbed), it sounded too good to be true. And it was...
First off, the bass on this unit sounds awful, either nonexistent or way too boomy. I was looking for a unit that could deliver audible bass at reasonable volumes and the Sony couldn't do that. I tried to adjust the sound but my options were severely limited. The unit comes with a preset equalizer with 5-10 settings but you can't program anything yourself. So I was stuck using the 'jazz' setting in an attempt to get the sound I wanted.
I even tried this unit with different speakers (Sony SS-MF515) and the MHC-MC1 still managed to make them sound terrible (and they are terrific speakers, I'll review them separately). I think the amp on this unit is incapable of delivering a good sound.
I think this was a defect in the one I purchased but I'll mention it here anyway - I ended up returning this unit after I started to hear a persistent hiss at low volumes, even between CD tracks. (I tried it in several different outlets and had the same problem.) I also grew to hate the killer robot look that the stereo has, especially how it would rumble menacingly while changing CDs.
This would be a great stereo for a teenager who wants a lot of features for not very much money or anyone who loves killer robots, but anyone who knows what their music is supposed to sound like will be disappointed in the MHC-MC1.
