At $169, it sounds like you could hardly go wrong with this VCR. I own an HR4600, which was replaced by the HR4800 but seems to be a slightly better model (for one, it has a thumb wheel on the Jog/Shuttle control).
I've never played a tape in my VCR that was recorded in LP mode, but it's good to know it works. I suppose JVC left that recording mode out since everyone probably just uses SP or EP/SLP anyway.
Acckk...I really like the layout of the remote, but I agree that the usability is just plain awful. It took me a while to figure out that you actually *can* start an on-demand recording with the remote.
While I'm here, thanks for reading my opinion on the Xbox. It'll be interesting to see whether the console lives up to its potential.
