PLEASE NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE HR-VP70U UNIT, NOT THE HP-VP770U UNIT. THIS MODEL IS A BIT DIFFERENT; MAINLY IT LAKCS THE "JOG" DIAL ON THE FRONT BUT IT IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE 770.
With that said, here's the review!
As I always do, I will cut to the point immediately. The HR-VP70U is a somewhat good VCR. It has many features that are standard on VCR's, such as:
() Front video inputs
() Rear video inputs/outputs
() RF/Cable inputs and outputs
() Special cable box inputs
() Special compu-link inputs (for newer TVs and camcorders)
What it doesn't have:
() S-Video inputs/outputs
() A jog dial (there is a directional pad on the remote instead, which doesn't work as well as a jog dial would.)
() Special audio outputs
As far as functionality goes, the VCR works just fine. One complaint, however, is that sometimes the rewind seems slow. There are no other problems besides that.
Programming it isn't very hard, the on-screen menus guide you through the entire process. The instruction manual covers everything, and is very well written and easy to follow.
The VCR comes with a "Plug-and-Play" feature that automatically sets your clock and tuner. The tuner setting works well, but the automatic time thing doesn't really work.
The VCR also uses the VCR-Plus system. This allows you to enter the code for a television program, and the VCR automatically sets itself to record the program. This sounds nice, and it is. However, setting up the channel guide and programming it is a major chore. We have it set up so we can use the VCR-Plus system, but we rarely use it.
Overall, the VCR works well, but it could be better. There are a lot of features, but most users will never use half of them. The number of features reflects the price, which is about $200. Most users can skip this VCR and get a cheaper one they will be perfectly happy with.
