| William's Full Review: Mitsubishi HS-U545 VHS VCR |
First things first! Mitsubishi make the best VCR's. Emerson makes the worst VCR's. Everything else falls somewhere in the gray area. I use VCR's everyday. After the initial purchase period all of the "extra" features are rarely used. What remain important are the quality of the MTS stereo decoder, the QUICK START mechanism, the speed of REWIND and FASTFORWARD, and EASE of PROGRAMMING. And the entire Mitsubishi line excells at all. The HSU 545 shares the goodness from the entire line. The remote is easy to understand, and is backlit. Its Jog Shuttle dial does what it is supposed to do. There is an easy setting on the remote that allows you to control two different Mitsubishi VCRS (great for dubbing) on the same remote without interfering with each others signals. Also, this unit is VERY quiet. The Mitsubishi PerfectTape feature is a real wonder. When loading a blank tape, the VCR takes a moment (if you want it to) to analyze your tape for the best possible recording. And it actually works! And perhaps my favorite feature on most Mitsubishi VCR's. When you press rewind or fastforward, a gauge appears on the screen (similar to a gas gauge) to let you know what part of the tape you are in. If you are in the middle, that is where the gauge it. PROGRAMMING is a snap. I bought one of these for my Aunt and Uncle and I haven't received one "How do I program this thing" call. And like many other VCR's, the clock is automatically set, so you won't see any more blinking 12:00 am. If you must buy another brand, (and I don't know why you would) please consider models by JVC and Panasonic. Stay away from Sony VCR's. Overall I love Sony as a company, but they make terrible VCR's and Telephones.
