Panasonic PV-9451. Hot or Not? You Decide.

Pros: Excellent picture quality, great remote. Excellent recording.
Cons: Motor is a little loud. Not a great warranty.
The Bottom Line: I like the picture, I like the sound and the recording. What more would you want?

Just in case anyone doesn't know the features of this VCR:
-Remarkable OSD
-VCR Plus
-Front AV jacks
-Rear AV in/out jacks
-RF in/oput
-Time/Memo stamp
-Illuminated remote. Very intuitive.
-Hi-Fi 4 head
The picture and sound quality on new pre-recorded tapes
is excellent. Rental tape playback quality will largely depend on the tape condition, but the 9451's digital auto tracking and auto. Picture control has been fairly good to this point. When recording broadcast at SLP speed, the playback quality does have the common surrounding visual noise that you'll see with any other unit at this speed, but the picture sharpness and color is still very good. For serious recording or dubbing, you should use the better quality SP speed, as this noticeably improves the playback. My only beef is the picture jitter at slow motion, but then again- its not like I watch slow motion that much.
This VCR is an outstanding value. I recently replaced my Panasonic PV-4351 with this newer model. The old one had tuner problems. The picture quality between the 2 is roughly the same. That's not bad considering the 4351 cost $260 in '94. The 9451 cost me only $135, normally everywhere else between $150 - $160. The 9451 maintained the performance of the 4351, added many useful features including VCR+, and was "HALF" the cost.
The main problem is that the VCR only has a 90 day warranty which might be a problem for people who break stuff a lot. But otherwise, this system is a definite recommend on my behalf.
