I purchased my Panasonic PV-9661 during the holiday season of 1999 and haven't been disappointed since. The VCR is very sleek in design. The tower remote is bulky, but with all the features it offers, they had to have room for all the buttons. With that in mind, the only disadvantage is if you have multiple remotes. Remember, though, this remote can be used as a universal for tvs/dss/cable and vcr.
The item price listed here is higher than I paid for mine... about $50 more than I paid. So it was definitely worth it for that amount of money. The picture quality on recordings is great, even on the faster speed settings (three settings: SP, LP & SLP). The sound quality fed through my surround sound system is flawless; even better than my supposedly "state-of-the-art" digital cable converter. Just follow the book for set-up purposes or contact Panasonic if need be.
I like the a/v inputs on the front. That way, I can hook up a camcorder, digital camera, 2nd VCR, or video game system that is only used on occasion.
All-in-all, this is the best VCR I've ever owned. With the advancement in technology, these may become obsolete, but you take that risk with all electronic purchases. Bear in mind, until DVD is recordable, VHS is still the leader in movie viewing at home.
