| shantel575's Full Review: RCA VR646HF VHS VCR |
My husband and I purchased a Sanyo VCR when we got married 4 years ago, and it bit the dust way before it's time! I wanted to mutilate the thing it got on my nerves so much! When we would sit down to enjoy a movie, it squealed in a really high pitch tone....very nerve racking! Finally, we broke down and got a new one. It has been wonderful thus far...
We purchased the RCA VR646HF in March 2000, and we have rather enjoyed it ever since! It has several very nice features that our old one did not have.
Obviously, it has the standard features: Play, Stop, Pause, Record, Rewind, Fast Forward, etc. For fear of sounding really stupid, and making you not want to read on...I won't elaborate on the obvious. :-)
We decided to purchase this VCR for a few reasons:
- RCA has a good reputation
- It was on sale, much cheaper than most others with same features
- Recommendation of salesman
This VCR is so easy to operate, it almost runs itself. When you first turn it on, you have to go through the "set-up" of the clock and channels, etc. It literally does it by itself. You answer a couple of questions using the remote control, and off it goes. The clock sets itself. We thought this was really neat!
Some of the features this VCR has are as follows:
* TIMED RECORDING
This feature allows you to program the VCR to record a specific program from the television. By entering the date, time and channel of the program you wish to record, and inserting a blank VHS tape, the VCR will program itself to record the program for you.
* VCR PLUS
This feature ties in with the TIMED RECORDING feature. It just makes the process a little easier...especially if you record the same program every day or week. You simply check your TV guide for the program listing you wish to record, and there will be a 5 digit code with the listing. You enter this code into the VCR with the remote, and the VCR automatically knows the date, channel and time of the program...all by itself! And you have the option to record this program daily, weekly, monthly or just one time. So Easy!
* COMMERCIAL ADVANCE
This feature allows you to skip those annoying commercials when you are viewing something recorded from the television.
How it works: You have to set the VCR programmed recording feature for this to work. (Meaning...it won't work if you just hit the record button). After the program is finished recording, the VCR automatically rewinds the tape to the beginning. Then it determines where the commercials are located and marks them. So when you play the recording, the commercials automatically fast forward! Makes viewing much faster and nicer! LOVE THIS FEATURE!
* MOVIE ADVANCE
This feature allows you to forward a tape to the beginning of a movie, whether it be a rented video, or a tape you personally made with more than one movie on it. It just allows you to skip over the previews on a rented movie, or the movies before the desired movie on a homemade tape.
* SLOW MOTION
Speaks for itself!
* PRO-TECT PLUS LOCKING FEATURE
This is a very nice feature if you have kids! Or if you have a spouse that forgets you have the VCR programmed to record!
You simply use the menus on the remote control to "Lock" the VCR, and this disables it. When locked, the buttons on the VCR will not work, nor will the Remote. It is just as easy to unlock.
There are several other "small" features in addition to the ones I have listed, but these are the main ones that influenced our buying decision.
We have really enjoyed this VCR, and highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new one! And definitely to anyone who records a lot of shows or movies off of television! The only "bad" thing I can say about this VCR is that it rewinds pretty slow. I don't know why, but it takes a little longer as it gets closer to the beginning. Maybe it's this way intentionally, I am just not sure of the reason.
We paid about $140 for ours at Circuit City. I'm sure it is for sale in any store that sells Electronics. Great buy!
