| bnlchick's Full Review: RCA VR650HF VHS VCR |
I purchased the RCA VR650HF when two of my other VCRs passed on. I'm not one to spend too much money on video technology, as the technology improves at a high rate. That said, I stayed with a brand that I thought produced quality products.
I was disappointed in this purchase. This VCR produces a good picture quality on high end videotapes, but that is about all I could find positive. All in all, it is easy to use but lacks the features that perk up even the average VCR buyer.
SOUND: This is a Hi Fi Stereo VCR, but I am convinced that the Hi Fi label no longer ensures quality audio. Even with this unit hooked up to my stereo I was disappointed. Older tapes that were not produced on a Hi Fi system make too many crackle sounds, and the audio goes in and out on occasion. This definitely detracts from what should be a quality VCR.
PICTURE: The four heads on this VCR do not give quality picture unless you use high end videotapes. I have ended up only using TDK E-HG on this unit because I do not want to put the extra money into tapes that are even better. There are too many lines that end up across my screen when I tape, so I generally use this VCR as a "play only" unit instead of a recorder.
REMOTE: You may ask, why are you rating the remote? Well, why not! That is the part of the unit that is used the most! This remote is very simple. I hate it. There are no fun buttons outside of slow and frame advance. The buttons are gray, the background is black... So, those who need more colorful buttons to help them see what they're looking at will be disappointed.
FEATURES: As I stated above, there are no real special features with this model. I knew this going in, but I was counting on a good picture and sound quality to tip the scales. Oh well... This unit does come with VCR Plus+. Frankly, I've never used it! If you value a VCR that can edit out commercials this unit may be slightly appealing to you. I don't use that feature either.
REWINDING: This VCR is not nice while rewinding. While it is hard on any VCR when rewinding a tape, I am fearful that my tapes will be eaten. Thus, I never rewind on this or any of my other units.
PRICE: Price is the catch on this model. I purchased it on sale two years ago for 129.99. Today you can get a new 4 head/Hi Fi on sale as low as 69.99, but it was a good deal when I bought it.
Overall, I don't recommend this VCR to anyone. I'm disappointed in RCA for putting out such a cheesy model, but it has opened my eyes to other brands. Lastly, if you lose the remote for this model, the buttons are not easy to use on the face of the unit. Keep the remote in a safe place!
