| Hamilton62's Full Review: Sony SLV-679HF VHS VCR |
I actually have this VCR's first cousin, the Sony 688HF; the two are almost identical. I paid about $200 a little over a year ago, so I think the 679HF is more recent. But what a machine this is! Reliable, useful, high quality, this is the way VCRs should always be.
I watch a lot of movies at home. Most of this is related to my hobby, which is watching and reviewing French films both new and old. The VCR delivers excellent sound quality and picture quality every time. If there is something wrong, it's always due to the tape, not the machine. The 688HF also has chords for external sound and so I hook it right into my stereo when I play a movie and the results are more than lifelike at times.
What's good about this VCR also is how easy it is to work with the controls. VCR plus is uncomplicated, changing time on the clock is easily done through the Menu button. It's mostly a playback machine for me, but the recording quality is also quite good when I have used it. I also like the backwards counter feature that tells me how much more of the movie there is left to see. It's a very good tool for movie reviewing.
If there is a drawback, it is the one or two buttons on the remote that puzzle me, namely the audio monitor button and the quick timer, which I guess is used when you want to quickly record something you are watching. The smart cue button is puzzling also, but I don't have much of a need for it.
This is a simple, relatively inexpensive and elegant machine. Buy it if you are tired of putting up with VCRs that are really lower in quality.
