Once you figure out how to use it, this is a pretty solid machine. Using high quality video cassettes, the playback quality of videos recorded on this unit at both SP/SLP are average. When playing pre-recorded tapes the picture quality is excellent. The auto tracking minimized resolution issues on some tapes that have known problems. They actually play better on this VCR than on a higher-end model that I own.
The remote control itself is easy to understand. How the remote interfaces with the VCR's functions is quite complicated. The buttons used on the remote to scroll or select items in the menu change depending on which functions you are attempting to adjust. I found that I had to consult the instruction manual the first 2 times I attempted to record a program because in order to set the timer 2 buttons on the remote must be pressed simultaneously. And while setting the time and date of the recording, you are only allowed to scroll, you cannot directly enter the numbers into the programming.
Programming confusion aside, the other functions of this VCR are solid. Again the picture quality is great and the fast forwarding and rewinding are comparatively fast. I do like it, but there's a part of me that's glad it was free.
