| thrasher32's Full Review: JVC HR-S9600 S-VHS VCR |
Well, I've owned the HR-S9600U for over a year now, and have had absolutely no problems with it thus far, even using the deck on a daily basis.
I must admit, I was leery about buying a JVC VCR. I have had problems with another JVC VCR (it creases and eats tapes with a ravenous appetite) and I didn't want to have the same problems with this one.
This is the top of the line JVC VCR, and it shows. The construction is better than all the other models, and it looks different (metallic rather than black finish). The features are very good too. Digital image stabiliser really does wonders on damaged tapes (I have a lot of those, thanks to my other JVC VCR), and the picture quality is beyond excellent-as long as you are using SVHS tapes. One thing I really like is that when you have the picture in slo-mo, you can still hear the sound! Also, you get normal sound when in FF and REW. Unusual for a VCR, but nice.
The main problem I have with this VCR is that it was too expensive (about $400), and the SVHS tapes are outrageously expensive. I mean, who wants to spend 6 or 7 dollars on a single videotape? That cost adds up real quick if you have a lot of stuff to tape. Compared to the .50-1.00 per tape price of regular VHS tapes, it looks like price gouging. Yes, you can use those cheapo VHS tapes in this machine, but don't expect much from them except clogging up your heads.
The bottom line on this VCR is this: The picture quality is excellent, the reliablility is very good (so far), and the tapes are too expensive.
