I bought the 9600U because I read some glowing reviews on the picture quality, even with old tapes (which I have plenty of).
When I can get the machine to accept a tape, new or old, the recording and playback quality is almost as good as my Panasonic model AG-1980 (retails at about $1700). The problem is the doing battle with the 9600U to get it to accept tapes. It has creased tapes, refused to accept tapes (tape icon light blinks rapidly, and then spits it back out), held on to tapes so tenaciously that it has taken a large fish hook to pull the tape back out.
I tried tricking it into taking the tapes with probably a dozen tactics. Maddening, but I needed the machine at the time. Some tricks, like shutting off the machine and very gently pushing the tape in. Worked more than the other tries, but still not often. This machine has even refused some tapes that it had accepted and recorded on before!
Perhaps I have not learned anything, I bought another machine, though this is the 7600U. It works flawlessly. So far. Go Figure.
I will soon be testing the waters of repair with JVC and will report back on the success or failure with the 9600U.
