| johnzena's Full Review: Hughes HDR-205 DVHS VCR |
I bought this product because I thought it would be cool to have a product that could record digital quality equal to the original satellite broadcast.
My experience with this product has been one of bitter sweetness. Mostly bitter. Recording is straightforward using the Hughes satellite receiver. You tell it you're recording on a DVHS and then set the time to be broadcast like any other receiver or VCR. This part is a complete positive.
What I love about this product is when it works you get a perfect copy of the original movie. If it's in Dolby Digital it records in Dolby Digital.
What I hate about this product is digital glitch galore. Sometimes when you play back a movie you get digital pixelization and audio dropouts or a loud screech through your speaker system as much as every thirty seconds. Talk about being annoying. Plus when I record in the regular VHS mode, especially in the EP mode the picture is absolutely horrible. In SP mode the picture is smeary from the colors bleeding into each other. In EP the picture is extremely grainy and rainbow patterns on the screen. HORRIBLE!!!!!
One other thing I hate about it is the lousy customer service and ninety day warranty. They acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. I kept watching it thinking maybe the heads needed to be broken in but when I finally decided to do something about it the warranty was over. Plus the only authorized dealer to work on their DVHS was in Atlanta GA. I live in Las Vegas NV. I would have to mail this across the country. This is crazy.
Those who should buy this is if my vcr is an isolated incident. Otherwise don't waste your money.
