| snobrd63's Full Review: Aiwa AM-F70 Personal MiniDisc Player |
Like I said, I've had three MiniDisc players and this was definitely the best one. My brother recommended that I did'nt buy it because, "Sony invented the walkman, the portable CD, and the Minidisc so they must be the best". I'm not sure about this, but since then one of my friends told me Sony owns Aiwa. I got mine used off egghead for $135, which is great for such a good MD player/recorder. Unfortunately, it got soaked in Mug root beer because i packaged it in the same bag with some drinks, and one of the cans exploded.
SOUND
Unfortunately, like all of my portable MD's, the volume is not incredibly loud. In some situations I have to have the unit full volume for the music to be audible at all. One thing that helps this is to buy a better set of headphones, as the pair that come with the unit is not very good. Also, making a digital recording (you have to use a fiber optic cable) not only makes for a louder recording but increases sound quality. The volume and many other things such as track naming is controlled by a jog dial, which i love dearly.
RECORDING
Recording with this portable player is a lot easier than most other complicated portable MD players. You just plug the unit in to whatever you are recording from and slide a button on the side of the unit. A useful feature when recording is syncro record, which is turned on and off with a switch on the bottom of the unit. This feature automatically separates songs, so you don't have to go through after recording and divide up one back track. This MD recorder has all the functions and capabilities of any other MD recorder I've ever seen, including the big not portable ones.
PLAYBACK
The playback on this MD is very good quality, aside from the low volume. And again i recommend you record digital whenever possible, it improves the sound quality a lot. Four of the buttons on this player light up whenever something is pressed, the play button, stop button, and both track buttons. I've never seen this before on anything portable, and even though it's not really necessary I think it's awesome. The remote, which is a small controller that plugs into the side of the unit, also lights up and aside from recording does all the things that the buttons on the unit do. It's convenient because you can control the unit without pulling it out of your pocket or purse. The unit also has a "hold" feature, another switch on the back of the unit controls this and its there so that if the unit is in your pocket and a button gets pressed, it wont affect playback. There is also a separate hold feature on the remote, but I cant see why you would need to use it unless you pocket it also.
BATTERY LIFE
The battery life on this unit claims to be somewhere around 15 hrs. on the Li-ion internal battery, which charges every time you plug the unit in (if you purchase this unit, make sure you NEVER LET THE BATTERY DIE, if you do then it will never hold a good charge again). You can extend the battery life to 40 hrs. with another battery pack that comes with the unit. This battery pack runs of three AA alkaline batterys, and while it does increase the life of the unit a lot, it is also half the size of unit and takes away its great portability.
