| kitkit201's Full Review: Aiwa AM-F70 Personal MiniDisc Player |
This review is for the Aiwa AM-F70, Asia version.
I got this player from connections through my friends, so the player wasn't in the best condition. However, my review will not be based on the fact that the player is used, or abused, but rather the features and how good it is still. Also a small comparison from my previous two players, the Sharp 702 and 722.
Visually, the Aiwa AM-F70 doesn't look especially attractive on the top, but thanks to the multi-jog, it helps on me a lot with the titling and adjusting the volume. Furthermore, the backlight option is especially helpful for those dark places and even the main buttons, (play/pause, stop, forward, back) are light. The player wasn't that hard to use once you understood how to get into the editing menu, but it was a task trying to figure it out without the manual. Like all minidisc recorders, there is the option of combining, dividing, moving and erasing one or all tracks..,.. there are buttons everywhere, which is a plus for the visuals but a minus for user-friendliness, if you will. I had a Sharp 722 recorder and it was the most user friendly recorder possible, (the buttons were all on top and was easy to figure out without the manual), but it was not visually pleasing.
Soundwise, the Aiwa does somewhat compare to the sharp, but where the aiwa lacks is the bass area.. the recordings that I made on the Sharp have great highs and lows and deep bass, but the Aiwa fails to compare in the sound of the bass.. but if bass is not your forte, then turn it off and enjoy the equally good music that compares to the Sharp. Even after the wear of the player it is still working as good as the first day, so this player lasts well!~!
I am sure that if you buy this player from ebay, you will receive a optical cable as well, but I am not sure, so don't quote me on this. Otherwise, it will last 10 hours playing and 4 hours recording on a charge, plenty for everyday use and long trips even. If you need more time, then you can bring 3 AA batteries, use the add-on adapter and get a crazy 40+ hours of playtime!
In the end, the Aiwa Am-70 is worth the price of admission no matter the angle you look at it. The weak bass may deter others, but the backlight and long battery life and low cost (on ebay.com) will be enough for entry users getting into the Minidisc genre.
