| ashtontt's Full Review: Aiwa AM-F70 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I got this MD recorder as a Christmas present a year ago. Actually I got money for it and I bought it from www.minidisco.com for $250. The one I have is the black Japanese version. I don't know why, but somehow I thought that the US version was made in Malaysia or Singapore or something, and I wanted the unit to be made in Japan... Not that it makes much of a difference. The reason I got the Aiwa AM-f70 was because I wanted a way to record my mp3's onto something I can carry with me on the road, when I commute. Well, I was a brat who wanted this cool new things was a big reason as well, but that's a different review all in itself. At that time, mp3 players weren't really what they are like today. Plus with MD's you can record just about any medium, not just mp3's.
I did my research and the AM-f70 was pretty much the best deal around. Sony and Sharp makes good MD recorders too, but the AM-f70 had consistent good reviews all around, and the price was just right for someone just getting into MD's.
The size of the AM-f70 is larger compare to many of the other recorders out there, but still tiny compare to a regular discman. With a nice metal finish, the AM-f70 looks alot better than the Sharp player/recorders. Aesthetics is a big selling point for me.
The AM-f70 comes with all the standard MD functions, record, erase, combine, etc etc.. I don't use all the functions enough to remember them all. But rest assure that it's got them all. One thing I like about the AM-f70 is that the LCD is well lit when a button is pressed. It glows with sort of an indiglo kind of light. The remote for this unit is made of a very light plastic... I would have liked it more if the remote was made of a more sturdy material. It's a pretty cool remote, the LCD on it lights up as well when you press on a button on it. Most of the functions such a volume, skip, play, stop, etc are on the remote. You can even record from the remote I think... The one bad thing about the remote is that the remote cable is WAY too short.
The AM-f70 comes with a lithium ion battery, which lasts a good 3 or 4 hours fully charged. The battery pack that came with the unit is huge, and even though it would extend the playback time to about 10 hours, I wouldn't use it simply because of it's bulky size.
Operation of the AM-f70 is relatively easy with the jog dial. Recording is a breeze.
The thing about recording minidiscs is that it takes the same amount of time to listen to the song to record the song onto minidisc. Which basically means that if you want to record 60 minutes worth of songs on a MD, you would have to sit there for an hour waiting for the MD to record. That's the main reason I don't really use the AM-f70 anymore. With cd writers writing a 74 minute disc in 10 minutes, I am really not patient enough to sit through an hour to record one minidisc.
The MD technology is very cool to have and very portable. And if you are looking for a decent MD recorder/player with loads of features and cool exterior, the AM-f70 should definitely be on your list to check out.
