| jpa25's Full Review: Aiwa AM-F70 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I bought the Aiwa AM-F70 mini-disc player last Christmas. I was looking for an MP3 player, but I decided to go with a mini-disc player because of its versatility.
At the time the AM-F70 was the smallest MD unit available; today it is still small compared to other models. Out of the box it was relatively easy to use. I had no figuring out the basic functions (record and play) without reading the instruction manual. The advanced functions; track separation, track naming, play modes, etc., were also easy to learn.
Right away I had some concerns about the sound quality. On my first recording the volume level was low. After some research I decided to buy a better set of headphones and adjust the players recording volume level to the max. This marginally helped. However, I was still happy with my AM-F70. I could record from MP3's, CD's, cassettes, virtually any music source.
One months later my back light stopped working. Then the AM-F70 began to slow down, it would take 4-5 MINUTES to read the TOC (table of contents), and then it would take the same amount of time to switch between tracks. My AM-F70 was now useless. I called jdelectronics, the place that I had purchased it at and they said they could not help me; I had to call Aiwa. Aiwa was of no help either. They wouldn't repair it or send me a new one. They gave me a third party contact that could fix it, but the repair cost would have been equal to the cost of the unit.
I don't know if this was an isolated case, it may have just been one defective unit.
If you are in the market for an MD player I wold look elsewhere. There are others that have a better track record and better sound quality.
