| Chris_Tal's Full Review: Aiwa AM-F70 Personal MiniDisc Player |
It was either MD or mp3. mp3 is too early, one hour of poor quality tunes for the same price as higher, in my view, quality and longer play (just pop in another disc). One can also record on the move with a recordable MD player. So thats what it was to be, recordable MD.
I trip to Circuit City saw me drool over two models: Sony's MZR55 and Aiwa's AMF70. The Aiwa looked more pleasing and had an editing wheel that made all the sense in the world (take note Sony). I mulled awhile and then reached my decision. The Aiwa was the one for me.
I duly had $250 surgically removed from my wallet and scurried home with my brand new MD recorder. Openning the box I was greeted by 'The Gadget Smell' (All the plasic bags and polystyrene, mmmm). I charged up the battery which took a short while and was then ready to go. I popped in a MD and fired up Fatboy Slim. The sound was good the feel was great, and it looked the business. Joy!!!
The features on this MD are excellent. Sound is good, swoops are fun and it lights up like a christmas tree in the dark. It is a little large than a Sony but had a good feel to it. Has no line out though, and why oh why do no portable MD have digital outs, its so easy to do. I love the design and it is carried off well.
A few weeks of faithful service followed. Friends admired, I adored. I like gadgets so decided to experiment. I connected up a signal generator to it and recorded some squeels. All was fine and I observed the performance in great detail. I NEVER unscrewed it and am sure that the signal generator did it no harm but HORROR.
Death of a MiniDisc. I couldnt eject the disc that was in it. This was a good week after playing with it in the lab. sliding the disc eject didnt work. Time for it to go back to the store :~(.
I ended up swapping it for the Sony, which had since improved (USB cable included), but thats a different story.
