I saw this little unit in J&R's catalog the other day for $100 and couldn't pass it up. As a proud owner of a Sharp 702 for over a year now, I wanted something that didn't take up so much room in my lunch kit or pocket.I wasn't disappointed by its size, however there were a few glitches...First off, it only resumes play from the pause mode- if you press stop or power down, it starts from the beginning of the track- the Sharp always picks up where you leave off.The a.c.(active clear) bass has only one setting- on. It seems to be equivalent to the Sharp"s bass 2 (of 3) setting. You will either love or hate the way you have to charge the internal battery. I'm used to my 702 where I just plug in the ac adapter to the unit & it charges the internal battery. With the JVC. you remove the internal Ni-MH battery and put it into the charger & plug the ac adapter into the charger. If you want to run the unit on ac, you have to install the external battery case (being sure to remove the AA battery), plug in the outlet from the charger into the jack on the external battery case, and then throw the charger's switch from charge to adapter. Obviously you can't run on ac and charge at the same time (not many portables do), but with the prodigious 7 hour run time on either the internal Ni-MH or external single AA (16 hours using both), it's really not a problem. The book says the external battery case won't power the unit while the Ni-MH battery is out & charging- I've found that it does.
