Pros: Inexpensive. Small. Nice remote.
Cons: Mine broke after 2 years. Batteries wear out too easily. Remote glitches.
The Bottom Line: While the 702 lasted, it served me well. But it only has a 90 day service warranty and a one year parts warranty so when it broke, I was screwed.

| shep182's Full Review: Sharp MD-MS702 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I bought my Sharp MD-MS702 player/recorder for $225 in March 1999. It lasted me around 2 years. While my friend was ejecting a disk, the laser broke. The cost to fix the laser would be more than buying a new more recent model.
I bought the MD-MS702 because it was the most economical, best reviewed portable minidisc recorder at the time. It is pretty light and I was always able to fit it in my front pockets. It only has 10 second shock protection so sometimes when I was running or riding a bike it skipped. But besides that, it never skipped. Recording was easy. The battery somehow stopped retaining its charge about 1 1/2 years after I bought the 702 so I had to special order a new one online. They are not easily available in consumer stores, specialized battery ones or huge ones like Best Buy. And they are $40! The remote developed a glitch around the same time in which a small portion of the LCD screen was not operating. This was not a big deal.
After I purchased a home CD/MD player/recorder component for my stereo, I mainly used the 702 in my car with a cassette adapter. The 702 was perfectly suited for this as I could put it in a space that most cars have under the air conditioning controls and place the remote on my right side near my gear shifter. This way, I was able to easily eject and insert minidiscs without moving the player and switch tracks without taking my eyes off the road. The ease of using minidiscs in a car without a changer compared to CDs is often unsung. You can throw them around on the floor and seats, have people put their feet on them and not have to worry because they have strong caddies. Also, you can store up to around 7 minidiscs in one cup holder. I kept a small minidisc binder that held around 40 minidiscs so this also helped.
