| maclaurin's Full Review: Sharp MD-MS702 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I bought a Sharp 702 in September 1998 and this last summer I returned it for a Sony MZ-R50.
While the price of the Sharp may have be better than most Mini Disc players at the time, I bought it out of the box from Circuit City for $240, which was about $60 less than the comparable Sony model at the time. However, I wish that I had spent money on the Sony for several reasons.
1) The lack of ESP, or shock protection, was a severe annoyance, even while walking the Mini Disc would skip if I was not holding it.
2) The Sharp Customer Service was awful. I was not happy with having only a rechargeable battery, I wanted to be able to use AA batteries as well. I ordered a battery case and every month for 9 MONTHS I received a letter saying it was out of stock and they would hopefully fill the order within 30 days. I finally cancelled the order when I bought the Sony. In addition, I was not entirely impressed with the rechargeable battery. It never lasted as long as reviews claimed it did. Mine would last for about 3 hours of playback.
While I love Mini Discs and think a player is a great investment, I would recommend that you buy a Sony instead. The Sony MZ-R50 comes with a battery case ($25 for the 702), a digital cable ($25-40 at most stores, not included with the 702) and has 40 second shock protection. Beyond that the player works well and is easy to use (except that the remote is fairly cheap and easy to damage, the clip broke on mine).
Overall the sound was good (although they gave you cheap headphones) and the recording was simple to use.
The problem was while the 702 performed fairly well, the above reasons cancelled out all of the good aspects of the player.
While Sharp may have had good intentions, I was not impressed with their player and I would recommend that others do not make the same mistake I did.
