| navin2000's Full Review: Sharp MD-MS722 Personal MiniDisc Player |
Well actually MP3 players never clicked, anyway...
I never knew what an MD player is untill one friend of mine, showed me his and that's when I was amazed to find this little CD like disk called mini-disk, which gives you almost(officially advertised, but to me it sounds like CD) CD like quality and you RECORD and RE-RECORD any number of times. That's when it hit me. Just a few days before buying this player, I was experimenting with using my portable Cd player at the gym and found it so awkard because of it's big size.
So I went ahead and started searching the web for reviews and price. I found minidisco.com as the best site to get latest mini-disc information. The price listed here was around 250 for this player and I wasn't willing to pay that high a price and my friend had got a little older model than this one for 150 bucks at amazon. Upon further searching on yahoo.com I found that www.electronicsemall.com was selling this for just $160 bucks plus 10 bucks shipping. That was a damn good price so I went ahead and brought it.
The best thing I like about this player is that you can record in two different ways, analog and digital. For analog you need to get a analog to analog cable from RadioShack or any such store for around 3-5 bucks. This is to plug one end into your CD player's headphone jack or your computers sound out jack and any such jack and you are all set to record whatever that device is emitting out. The sound quality of the recorded material is little bit inferior to the source. If you want the same quality as the source, you can use the supplied optical cable and any source that has an optical out to do the digital recording.
The player looks so slick and has the cool jog dial feature. The player comes with the newer kinds of full function remotes. I like the round shaped remote that comes with this player versus the stick kinds that come with other players. The stick ones have a spring underneath a button to change tracks and that is prone to quick wearout. The remote is backlighted and displays a cool graphic for any song that you haven't yet named.
Another friend of mine saw my minidisc and brought a model from sony which is half the thickness of this one. But that model which is the slimest in the market right now, suffers from a problem where-in it takes atleast 5 seconds to start playing the next track after you forward or rewind, which sucks. Also the minidisc insert mechanism is not like this player. This player has a minidisc insert mechanism like a floppy of a computer. Others have a door kind of mechanism which THROW the disc out with force. But yet again those are good if the label on your minidisc gets peeled out and the disc is stuck. It is easy to fix that than the one in this one.
The player runs of a rechargeable battery which is pretty expensive to buy. I believe it costs about 30 bucks. But the one that comes with the player should last a long time. To increasing the playing time, you can optionally add a AA battery in the externally supplied AA battery holder which can be plugged to the player. But you do need the rechargeable battery in the player for this to work, even if that battery has no charge left.
Compared to MP3 players memory modules which cost 100 bucks and can only store 40 mins. of music at 160khz, the minidiscs cost just 2 bucks (prices keep going down) and can record the same amount as a regular CD. Some minidiscs can record even 80 mins.
Overall I am very satisfied with this model and it is a regular companion to the gym and at work as I work on the computer a lot.
