| mrbluesky's Full Review: Sharp MD-MS722 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I bought the Sharp MD-MS722 minidisc recorder/player and I must say that I am very satisfied. I wanted to download MP3 files from the internet, and transfer them to my minidisc. The cord provided with the minidisc is RCA type, while my computer output jack was 8 mm. I bought a 8 mm to RCA converter for a couple bucks and it works great. I can now transfer files from my computer to the minidisc and vice versa. I've heard others say the sound reproduction is very good, and I agree.
It took me about an hour and a half to learn how to use all the features of it. When you have recorded a track, it's very easy to split a track, rearrange tracks, or splice tracks together. Here's an example of when you may use these features. Suppose you're recording a speech, and someone coughs loudly, which your recorder picks up. Its easy to create a track of just that cough, then delete that track. The finished result will be a seamless recording, without the extraneous noises. The recording features are numerous.
The layout of the front of the player is a little busy, and may be imposing on someone first trying to use it. But it looks much harder to use than it actually is. You use a "jog dial" (a ring that turns) for a couple different functions. Its a very convenient feature and makes naming tracks a breeze. The use of the other buttons came to me quickly when I used them a time or two.
You can set the sensitivity of the microphone as to when to record also. If you know there will be a lot of background noise and chatter, you can set the recorder accordingly, so only the desired subject will be recorded. If after a period of time the recorder senses nothing to record, it will place itself in standby mode, and only record again when it senses noise.
You can either have the recorder create one track for what you're recording, or have the recorder determine when to create a new track. The number of tracks on one disk is only limited to the recording time of that disk.
Do you want to create realaudio files and place them on the internet? Easy! Get the recording the way you want it on the minidisc. Use the free version of RealProducer to translate the file from the current version to an rm type. From there its just a matter of having the webspace and permission to upload the file to. RealProducer will even create the webpage for you.
Another nice thing about this unit is how compact it is. It fits right in my pocket, so I don't have to hold it in my hand if I go for a walk. The headphones provided with the unit are extremely basic. If you're used to a pair that is more comfortable or somewhat nicer, you'll need to get different headphones. A rechargeable battery is included with the unit, and can be recharged 300 times, according to the manual. You recharge the battery simply by plugging the player in an electrical outlet. You can extend the play time by adding a AAA battery.
I would highly recommend this unit.
