| ellerock's Full Review: Sharp MD-MT821 Personal MiniDisc Player |
The Sharp MD MT821 is a wonderful alternative to portable CD players with the distinct advantages of being much smaller, more durable, and capable of recording. It is great for making mixes for working out, parties, etc. It plugs into any stereo system so that you can listen with other people.
It does not have a clip or a strap, so you can not attach it to your body, making it more difficult to use while exercising. However, it is small enough to carry in your hands, or put in a pocket. It will not skip during running or jogging (even if you are holding it in your hand). It will skip during intense exercise or jumping.
Because there is no clip, I have dropped mine several times. It has also fallen off of my car seat, dresser, etc., and even been found once in my Rottweiler's mouth! However, the only damage is a small scratch on the surface, and a lost felt ear phone cover. It still works as well as the day I bought it.
The features are easy to use as prompts appear in the display window. The Sharp can be connected to a portable CD player or stereo for recording, and has a memory of 6 seconds so that you can record radio songs without missing the first few seconds. Unfortunately, you will need different cables to record from different songs, and they are generally sold separately. The cable that comes with the unit is analog, but I can not tell the difference in quality between my analog and digital recordings.
The Sharp MD MT821 is expensive, but well-worth the price. However, pre-recorded MDs are nearly impossible to find and blank ones can also be difficult to find and pricey. Before you buy this, or any MD player, make sure you are willing to put in the time to record all of your own MDs. Also, if you are picky about head phones, you will want to know that, because of the conformation of the ear phone jack, you can only use the phones that come with the unit. These are the kind with long flimsy wires and heads that fit inside your ears.
