| RobotBill's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-E25 Personal MiniDisc Player |
-re: The MZ-E25 spontaniously sputters out.
Speaking from experience, I absolutely LOVE the minidisc technology. There is nothing that even comares to it's ease of use, portablilty, sound quality and cost. By cost, I mean in comparison with other popular digital recording devices. Portable MP3 recorders are a waste of money, unless you're a hard-core runner, and you don't mind listening to the same seven songs over and over and over..... Extra memory cartridges for MP3 recorders start around $80 for just 32mb. Translation=$80 for aproximently 32 minutes of song space. Compare this with the mini disc's $2-3 for 74 minutes of space on a blank disc, asuming you have a portable or home recorder&player. For those of us with a freind who owns a recorder, or those who don't mind the rather scanty selection of pre-recorded mini disks, you might consider opting for a portable minidisc unit that only plays and does not record. Such a unit is the MZ-E25 from Sony. It's compact design makes stareing at it's beauty an easy task and taking it with you even easier, but for $100 more, a player and recorder model can be purchased that is in fact smaller than the MZ-E25. Regardless of the cost, this model is pretty much the quintessential low end, stripped down featureless unit of minidisc players. For less than $160 this wouldn't be so bad.....if it worked. Just weeks after aquiring the MZ-E25, my unit spontaniously stopped working. I never dropped it, got it wet- nothing out of the ordinary. But now, it does not work, does not turn on, and does not play music. In fact, it is little more than a very expensive paper weight, in other words...worthless. I have had similar experiences with Sony products, a few years ago I bought a portable CD player with ESP that worked fine for a few months, then decided it wanted to stop playing music. Never agian will I buy from Sony, and I urge you to do the same if you're thinking about buying a minidisc player. I suggest something from Sharp, they make superb minidisc units for much cheaper. I currently own the sony MS702, a recently discontinued model, but an excellent one. Please, shop around, try to find a better use of your money, if you still want to spend it on the MZ-E25 consider donating $100+ to charity, or at least buying a minidisc recorder from Sharp.
