For the money ($179, Crutchfield.com, Feb 2000), the Sony MZ-E44 is one of the most affordable MD players out there. All in all, it's a great value. It lacks some features, but I think the craftsmanship makes up for it.
The most outstanding feature of this piece is its solid feel. The housing, button, and mechanisms are all built to last years. This is a far cry from some of the other players out there, which are designed for size or looks, not durability. At the same time, however, the MZ-E44 is still small and sleek. Don't worry: it's nothing like those clunky, yellow "Sport" walkmen or discmen.
The standard Sony remote is great, although I wish it could display more text at once. (It's a problem when it has to scroll for a 5-letter title.)
In terms of sound, I have no complaints.
Shortcomings? It only has a 10-second skip protection, which is *just* enough for casual walking (it skipped once during a walk). And the battery life is acceptable, but not the great.
All in all, I'm happy with the machine. I think it'll last years.
