| pglov's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-EP11 Personal MiniDisc Player |
Before the IPOD and the Rio, there was the SONY MZ-EP11 Minidisc player. While MP3 players are being hailed as "the next big thing" in the music player industry, this review may just change your mind. While the MZEP-11 player is a minidisc (not MP3) player, I have found it to be a durable and convenient way to listen to minidiscs.
What the MZEP11 is: (features)
This unit plays minidisc media.
The base unit includes a handy "stick" remote, which features a backlight for easy readability.
This unit uses AA batteries and has about 9 (in my experience) hours of battery life.
This is just a player, it does NOT have record capability.
Who should buy this player?
The EP11 is a great option for those who have already discovered and are currently using minidiscs.
This player would make a great companion unit for those who already have a home unit or a portable minidisc recorder.
I have dropped it many times and its durable body taken the punishment and kept on playing.
I have found it very convienient to have the EP11 unit in addition to my home minidisc recorder. Its great for when you go jogging or walking, and this is also good to take on car rides or on family vacations.
Last (but certainly not least) this player is affordable! When I bought it a number of years ago the price was around 200USD. While the advent of newer technologies has brought the prices down, this player is a quality product that stands up to the new competition in the minidisc market.
If you have a collection of minidiscs and want a solid player, this is the one for you.
This player is NOT a good option if:
1. You have thousands of MP3s and are looking to record them on to digital media. Why? Because the EP11 is a minidisc player ONLY, again, no record function on this unit. If you have many MP3s and are looking for a digital music player, I highly recommend the IPOD by Apple. I have personal experience with the IPOD and I enjoy using it very much. Its easy and allows you to store literally thousands of songs.
2. You are just now getting started as a minidisc user.
Why? This unit only allows you to play minidiscs which have already been recorded, you cannot record new minidiscs using this unit. For those in the market for a minidisc recorder, I recommend the SONY MZR91.
BOTTOM LINE: This is a great player for those minidisc users looking for a durable, portable, and convenient second unit. (Especially useful for jogging, exercising, car trips, etc)
