| sparky506's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-EP11 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I have owned this portable unit for about a year and a half now. My father gave it to me for my birthday in the summer of 1999. He later bought one for himself, the MZ-E25. He had previously bought the desktop system, Sony's MDS-JE520. I love mine, and use it very often. The MZ-EP11 has great sound, very small, so it's easy to carry it around, long battery life, the little clicky thing, and it is very affordable.
First off, the whole minidisc idea is excellent. That is one of the reasons that I love having this little contraption. I can record off the radio, CDs, tapes, record players, and other minidiscs. Another thing that is awesome is that you can just delete one song, not having to erase all of the songs, and rerecord. Next, you can swap around songs. I recently recorded ZZ Top's Greatest Hits onto a minidisc. I liked tracks 1-4, 7, 13, 16, and 18. I didn't like the idea of changing after each of the last four songs. So I moved all those tracks to the first 8 tracks, so I can listen straight through them, and not change.
Okay, about the MZ-EP11. It has excellent sound. It doesn't matter if I put in my dad's $70 headphones, or the little ones like the ones shown in the picture, it has excellent sound. The only trick is when you record from say, a CD, you must make sure that the sound goes right up to the red, but not over. If you do this, it will have superior sound.
Next, it is extremely small. I have many pairs of carpenter jeans, and it fits into the small square pocket on the right side. I can put the minidisc player, and one minidisc with case in that pocket, (unseen by the teachers at school) and the headphones with the little clicky thing in the top pocket. Also, I have put it in my front pants pocket, also unseen by teachers. You can't do that with a CD player.
It also has long battery life. It might just be the battery, but I listened to it all first period the other day, and it only used a little over half of the battery. It shows the battery life on the little clicky thing. First period is about an hour and a half, so one battery could last as long as three hours. It also only requires one battery. I like that. Less money out of MY pocket.
Now, on to the little clicky thing. You'll see it right above the minidisc player in the picture. I don't know what to call it, except extremely convenient. All from the little clicky thing, you can change songs, control volume, control shuffle, play straight through, etc., pause, and if you, when recording, type in the names of the songs, it will tell you those, too. And it also has a clippy on the back to clip onto your pocket, so you won't have to go digging for it.
Finally, it is very affordable. The price of the Sony MZ-EP11 on the front page is $247. That's wrong. My dad said he paid $110 for it. That's about how much a good new CD player costs, and the MZ-EP11 can do SOOO much more than a CD player could ever do.
Okay, I've made my point. Now it's up to you. I think that minidiscs will be the next big thing. I think it's the best electronic device I own, with the exception of my computer, but that's like 16 times more expensive. The MZ-EP11 has everything you could want. I sure enjoy mine, and I recommend it to everyone that is a big music lover.
One thing I left out. It doesn't skip. I've dropped it on the floor, and it didn't skip. I've never heard the thing skip. That is amazing to me.
