| mothner's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-EP11 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I took the plunge summer of '99 and bought a new stereo complete with a 5-minidisc changer, and soon discovered the amazing functionality of the minidisc -- I realized I had to have a portable MD player to enjoy the total convenience of the MD.
MiniDiscs are a little under 3-inch squares, slightly thicker than a CD, and resemble a tiny floppy disk. The beauty of the minidisc is their durability as well as their recording-ability. First, with no exposed surfaces like a CD, you can treat the MDs rough, toss them on the floor, not to mention actually MOVE while listening to one with the portable MD player. But the greatest thing about MiniDisc players is the ability to record. I have a CD burner as well, but I find using MiniDiscs to be the way to go; they can be recorded over endless times and I can even record from MP3 straight from my computer, which is convenience unparalleled.
But back to the Sony MZ-EP11... For a fairly basic player, the EP11 has not been disappointing, but has not left me with nothing to complain about, either.
While super-rough movement will cause a "skip" on this machine, I can happily walk at a nice pace and do most normal work without causing any playing problems. However, I have found that for some reason it has been taking longer for the player to search and find a song than it seems it should, which makes me wonder if the machine is coming close to the end of it's life -- but, as of now, it's still chugging.
I love the little controller built into headset cord, which allows me to walk with the player itself hidden away in a pocket or backpack, but still control the playing on the disc. I only wish the display was back-lit for night-use, but hey, I opted for the cheaper model, so I can't really complain.
My final complaint is that this sucker goes through batteries like it is it's job! I can get about three hours of playing out of it, which is certainly good compared to a walkman or cd player, but I believe it could be better.
All in all, a good machine, not leaving me with too much to complain about. And whether you go for this player or not, take the MiniDisc Plunge!
My only other complaint is the ra
