| TheNihcman's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-EP11 Personal MiniDisc Player |
The Sony MD Walkman MZ-EP11 is by far, superior to any sony minidisc player on the market.
I feel that the EP-11 is the most durable players in the market. My other MD Players (MZ-E40, MZ-E60, MZ-R70) have all been dropped or hit by something, and currently, both are out of commission. This MD was even dropped off the stairs of my house, onto my solid marble floor by my little cousin, and despite the small 0.5" gash on the corner, it works like it was new.
Although Sony states that this MD Walkman only has a 10 second shock protection, I've found that I can use it almost forever, and it will not skip. I've even run two miles with it, without a single jump, pause or skip.
Even though you might not admit it, I think that many people depend on looks as a good 40-50% of why they purchased something. There's nothing to hide with this MD. I love showing it off, because it looks too good. The new Sony MD Walkman line (E-90, E-80, E-60) is consumed with dullness, and shows no creative ideas. The MZ-EP11 comes only in silver, and is embossed with an "X" shape, giving it a sporty look. Also, I have dropped this minidisc player numerous times, each time with barely a scratch or dent.
Another feature I find people tend to look at when buying portable audio equipment is how loud it can play. I, for one, with my MZ-E40 and my MZ-R70 need to max out the volume to hear my music the way I like it. With the EP-11, the volume only needs to be at about 65-80%... more than adequate for you at-home Heavy Rock listeners.
Also, the MZ-EP11 has a remote so simple to use, that I was able to figure it out the first time I saw it. There is a part of the rod-shaped remote that twists, to turn on the MD player, to advance or reverse the track, to search (Fast Forward/Rewind) the music and to stop the music. There are also buttons that allow you to switch the display on the LCD screen, select the play mode (Repeat, Shuffle, etc.) control the volume (with a digital bar graph on the LCD) and even a hold switch so you don't accidentally change the track at your favorite part. There's a little clip on the back, so you can attach it to your pocket, your collar, or wherever suits you best.
However, the battery life is to be desired... it's only 6-8 hours on a single "AA" battery. Also, with the MZ-EP11, you can't use the gumstick battery and a AA at the same time, as it can only hold one.
All in all, I'd definitely purchase another one, as my newest member of my MD Walkman family (the MZ-E60) is too dull for my liking, and the fact that it is broken.
