| natedogg2000's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-R37SP Personal MiniDisc Player |
I received the Sony MZ-R37SP mini-disc player as a gift and have used it for both a personal walkman/audio player and a digital device for enhancing the quality of sound from an analog source. Below are my impressions:
Recordable (and re-recordable). You can record via the optical/line in or mic in. If you have a decent quality microphone you can use it as a voice recorder. You can also record directly from a stereo or computer, e.g. if you wanted a copy of one of your CDs without having to lug around a CD case and player or record MP3s from your PC (like an MP3 player). In the case of a bad recording, you can always erase the track and re-record.
Sound: Sound quality is excellent. Crystal-clear, no (or very little) background hissing, and an optional bass boost which sounds great.
Features: This mini disc player has some nice editing features. You can easily cut, move, erase, and name tracks. You can also divide or merge tracks easily, and you can record as many tracks as you want until the disc fills up. One BIG word of caution: If you are erasing a track, make sure you are actually playing a track while holding the edit button for 2 seconds and it is specifying erasure of the track itself--otherwise you'll end up erasing the entire disc! I've done this countless times and it is one of the few drawbacks of this player. As for accidental usage, there is a hold switch that prevents this from happening so you won't drain your batteries or unwillingly press buttons.
Display screen: One of the drawbacks--it is small and not always easy to read unless you have good lighting.
PC support: No cables (e.g. USB) for connecting to the PC. However you can connect to a computer via the headphone or line out jack or from a computer via the optical/line in.
Durability: I have gotten tons of use out of this player. It has been dropped, bumped, scratched etc. over several years and it still operates fine. The one unfortunate thing is that a few months ago the headphone jack went bad and the sound only plays on the right side (I've tried it with multiple sets of headphones so it's not the headphones).
Responsiveness: Unlike some other digital audio devices (e.g. MP3 players) I've owned, this mini disc player is very responsive and quick--you don't have to wait 10 seconds between hitting a button and playing the CD.
Power: You can either power the unit through an A/C power adapter or 2 AA batteries. The battery life is fairly good, probably 4-6 hours out of a single set of AA's which is better than most portable CD players I've owned.
Operations: Because there are so many buttons, basic operation of this disc-man can be confusing especially at first. It's good to have a lot of features, but you may have to read the manual closely before using so you know what you're doing.
Portability: It's fairly small and not too thick and can fit in your pocket, so it's easy to transport. It does not, however, come with a belt clip or anything for working out or jogging.
Overall I have been impressed by this disc man and although I don't use it very much anymore since I have MP3 players and other more advanced digital recorders, it has stood the test of time and is still a great little mini-disc player/recorder.
