| geoffreysnow's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-R37SP Personal MiniDisc Player |
I first bought this thinking that it would be cool to have the music that I got on the internet available to me in a portable player. At first my only options that I saw were a mp3 player or a mini disc. Reading reviews of mp3 players, I continually saw that people who owned both mp3 and minidisc preferred the minidisc because of the price difference. After all, it is only about 5 dollars for md disc compared to the price that it costs for the memory for the mp3 player. So I looked around and I saw this md player on sale. It seemed like a great deal and it was what I wanted.
So I opened it and I started to put the music from my computer onto the discs. Man, that took a long time. Up to 74 minutes for each disc! But I figured who cares, I am able to take my music on the road and still have good quality. The player itself is very nice. It has a metal outside, which is nice. The only problem with it is that the metal is cold on cold days and it seems like it would dent easily. The buttons on the player seem small to me and very fragile. The volume up button has a little bit of movement from side to side which I don’t think is normal. It feels like if I’m not careful, it will fall off. I also have a DVD player so with optical input is nice because the DVD has optical out. So that means that I can put my cds that I bought onto minidisc. I love Sony’s rechargeable battery function. Just plug the player, with the energy plug connected to a wall socket, in and press the button and it charges itself. That is very convenient. The only downside is that the battery life isn’t as long as with normal batteries.
So here’s my problem with minidiscs. About a month later, I purchased a cd recorder. It records 4 times or faster and the cd’s are so much cheaper. Instead of 74 minute, it’s more like 15 minutes. One store was even having a sale where, after rebate, the cd’s were free! Everybody and their grandmother has a cd player too. So that means that I can ply my music on pretty much cd player that will accept burned cd’s. Not many people that I know have or use minidiscs. The quality using the optical line is perfect, but with a normal analog line (like from a stereo that does not have optical out or from a computer’s headphone jack) the sound quality is only as good as a FM radio to me. The minidisc player is much smaller that old cd players, but the cd players nowadays are getting so small and thin and are still much cheaper. The operation of the player is also a bit confusing (like ot record and delete or move tracks) and a cd player is much, much better.
So overall, if you’re looking for a neat little gadget that can record your music, this is it. But if you want something that is a little more convenient, faster, and more compatible, a cd burner is your best bet.
