| commando's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-R55 Personal MiniDisc Player |
The Sony MZ-R55 is one of the best-made electronic toys I own. You can feel when you pick it up that it is solid and tight - and that's important to people who appreciate quality.
I've been using my minidisc player/recorder since early summer, 1999, and I think I've heard it skip once, when I was running to get to work on time. It's been flawless.
Not too long ago I bought a fairly inexpensive stereo microphone, plugged it in and began recording. I can't believe how good the recording sound quality is. I've taken the mic, hung it from the rafters in my cellar and recording my band's rehearsals. Some of the recordings sound as good as our studio recordings.
If minidisc technology never really takes off here as much as it has in Japan, it doesn't matter. Pre-recorded minidiscs are all but a thing of the past, but let's face it - no one really buys a minidisc player to listen to premade minidiscs. We buy them because we want to listen to our own mixes, and that's where the R55 shines.
I'm lucky enough to have a stereo with a digital output. When it's hooked up to the minidisc, I can make nearly cd-quality mix discs that can later be partially or completely erased. I can also move tracks around on the disc after they've been recorded. The other great thing about the digital connection is that the CD player starts and stops the minidisc automatically.
My only complaint is that the included headphones don't match the quality of the player. Consider buying a better set of headphones when you buy the R55.
As long as companies continue to manufacture blank minidiscs, and they will, the R55 will continue to be a relevant and treasured toy in my bag.
