| ColinM's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-R91 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I bought my Sony MZ-R91 in blue. It looks cool, sounds excellent and has brilliant ease of use. I am listening to it now as I write this review and I can't emphasize enough how good this unit is! I'm sure you probably know the dimensions of the unit, but you have to see it to really appreciate it (stack two minidisc case on top of each other and that is how big it is!) It is so light, you don't even notice it in your pocket. The remote is excellent ('see-through' which looks cool) and can be operated easily with one hand (unlike the R55 remote). Recording is so easy with the TOS-Link optical cable supplied, just turn on 'Sync Record' and push play on the CD player (if you are lucky enough to have optical out on your CD player). If you want to know more here's my review for the MZ-R90 which is basically the same but is simply made out of a different kind of metal(not quite as durable as MZ-R91) and to me is very ugly compared to the MZ-R91:
MZ-R90:
First of all this is by far THE smallest MD portable Recorder to date (FEB 2000) When i recieved it in the mail i couldn't believe i had spent 310 bucks on something so small! This unit has many great features: Super long battery life! 12 hours off of the rechargeable alone! off of just one AA battery!!! The unit itself is constructed of Magnesium so its unbelieveably strong. I've dropped it at least 3 times on various surfaces and it hasn't even gotton scratched. The eject mechanism is great too. You simply slide the eject button and it pops the lid open and the disc out. Another great feature is the ability to title while recording or playing using either the remote or the unit itself. The remote is backlit and displays all the things that you need to know about various modes etc. The unit itself is not backlit but i never even look at the unit because the remote has everything you need. The sound quality is great too with 3 different bass settings. I recommend this unit for anyone new to the MD for its ease of use and great functions. It is one of the few MD units with a line out so you can hook it up to speakers or a car without having to worry about ruining your speakers. Also at a price of 310 (Imported from Japan) dollars at the lowest to 380 dollars at the highest. it's hard to resist such a good value. The only downside to this unit is that it takes about 5 sec to play a disc from stop. Also while your waiting for it to play the motor noise is audible. These problems however never seem to get in the way. For those of you who are thinking of importing it from Japan and are worried about the instructions worry no longer, they have both Japanese and English explanations of all the functions in the manual that comes with a Japanese unit.
