| rlngstrt's Full Review: Rio PMP-500 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
I bought a Rio 500 right after thay came out. At the time, they were the hottest MP3 player on the market, and there were very few others at that. I dropped $250 for the player and another $100 for the 32MB Smart Media card so that I would have a full 96MB in my player.
The USB interface is great for downloading songs to the device, and it is very quick as well. The sound quality is as good as an MP3 can sound at this time, which isn't half bad. The device is very easy to use, and so is the RioPort software that comes with it.
Also, at this point in time, the standard 64 MB of memory is not too shabby either, even though I expect that number to dramatically go up in the next 12-18 months. The device is very small and easy to carry around.
The only problem that I have with the Rio 500 itself, is the netted holster that comes with it so you can clip it to your belt. Whoever thought that would be a good idea, should be fired. The thing is useless, and besides, even if it did work well, I spent $250 on this thing, and if I clip it to my belt, I want it to have some class, not look like some cheap old FM radio.
One more problem that I am having, really has nothing to do with the device itself, but with the speed at which this technology is developing. Of course this is a good thing, but it also is a bad thing. I like to have the latest and greatest devices on the market, however, the second I bought this, I just kept noticing all of the newer ones that had more features coming to the market. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you do want to buy the Rio 500 now, be prepared to upgrade it in within the next year for the next best thing (This staement only applies to those who love the new devices, and have to have them when they hit the market!) For the rest of you, the Rio 500 is a great product, and I even think a better value since the price has come down a little over the past few months.
