| whitejp66's Full Review: Rio PMP-500 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
First of all, this is an expensive MP3 player, but you may be able to find a bargain. Most places are 240.00-270.00 but if you look long enough, you'll find one cheaper. Buy.bom had one when I bought mine for 228.00 and pretty cheap shipping. With a 10 dollar first time user coupon it ended up at 218....not too bad.
This player, simply put, is great sounding and easy to use. Do yourself a huge favor and don't expect much at all from the headphones that come with the PMP500 and run out and buy a decent set that will give you a better frequency range and volume. I truly can't believe that RIO would ship such a cool unit with such horribly cheezy sounding headphones, but you heard it hear first. Don't expect much from the case that is included either, it's poorly designed and makes button operation a nasty task.
The player's sound is absolutely the best on the market. The player's software is probably close to the worst. Encoding bit rates that are out of date (many offer higher and more flexible bir rate adjustment)and the possibility that you may get some digital echoing with lower processor speeds make this software package below average. Do yourself a favor here too and download either Musicmatch or Real Jukebox for free to encode CDs.
Now the good: Easy to use navigation buttons, simple design and outstanding sound quality (after you buy new headphones)and USB connection make this the best MP3 player on the market. It may not have all the features that some have, like FM radio or voice recorder but if it's MP3 listening that you're after, buy it.
