| seisenberg's Full Review: Rio PMP-500 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
All of the points brought up in sunami's review are indeed true. This is the finest portable mp3 player on the market. The size and designed have been improved, the signal-to-noise ratio (very important in mp3 players) is the highest you will find and it is expandable to 96 mb.
However, few issues arose in my eyes. First of all, $200 is a lot to pay for this considering it will not even likely be 4 months before the next generation mp3 players are released (higher s-t-n ratios, more memory etc). As is the case with most brand new products, if you wait a little while- the price will significantly drop.
Also, most ads and sunami's review state that the 96mb would be enough for 2 hours of music- this would only be possible with a decrease in quality. Standard mp3 files usually work out to about 1 minute of music to 1 mb- to get 120 minutes of music on 96 mbs would mean a decrease in the clarity of the songs. Also, you must remember that these come standard with 64 mb- enough for roughly an hour of music at the quality you are used to. To upgrade to 96 mb would cost a nice piece of change for a small increase in playing time. For those who are runners or using the player for a while, you know that an hour of music is not a whole lot- especially considering that you can't add more music until you get back to your PC.
The bottom line is- if you are an electronics fan and must have the newest everything, then this is for you. If you are a music lover who is thrilled about the idea of portable digital music, wait a little longer until the price of this product drops or players come out with a higher capacity for storage.
