| kkj1961's Full Review: Rio PMP-500 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
The main selling point of the Rio 500 (for me) was the 64mb of internal memory and the capability to expand the memory with Smartmedia cards. I am currently using a 16mb card in the external memory slot, which expands my total memory to 80mb. I can fit an average of 18-20 songs on my Rio 500 with my current memory level.
I have been impressed with the overall level of quality of the Rio 500. All of the buttons an switches have a solid, well-made fell to them. The battery life has been acceptable. I actually use my recharge-able batteries from my digital camera, so I haven't monitored the battery life too closely. The battery lasts at least a week during heavy use. I also have the habit of leaving my Rio turned on when I get out of the car, so my battery life estimates could be a bit conservative.
The ability to play audible files was not a big selling point, but I have purchased several audio books from Audible and have really enjoyed them. During a recent vacation to Cancun, I bought a couple audio books for my Rio and enjoyed lounging on the beach while I "listened" to my novels. Made it much easier to take in the "scenery".
The Rioport software is functional for transferring files to the player, but I prefer the Real Jukebox or Musicmatch players/rippers (available for free online) for organizing and playing files on my desktop. The USB interface definately makes loading files much quicker. I would not consider a player without a USB interface.
Overall, I've been very satisfied with my Rio, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, highly functional, MP3 player.
