I have owned both a Lyra and a Nomad and I preferred the Nomad. They both have strong and weak points, which I'll summarize quickly, then go into greater detail.
Pros for Lyra:
Lyra lets you transfer files to the player a lot quicker and easier.
Lyra has nicer headphones.
Lyra has a belt clip, which is nice for working out
Lyra has a bigger screen with a light
Pros for Nomad:
Nomad has a nice FM radio feature with easy presets, so you're not limited to the same 60 minutes of music
Nomad has a very handy voice recorder
Nomad is a lot smaller
Nomad starts playing music instantly; Lyra takes a long time to start up.
Lyra's buttons are easy to bump, which can stop music or shut down the system. Also, if left on pause or stop for a short time it shuts off. This is very frustrating since it takes so long to start back up.
Managing/transferring files:
Lyra wins, hands down. it uploads the files a lot faster using a USB port. Nomad uses a printer port, so you may have to switch between the Nomad's connector and your printer, which is a hassle. Also, Lyra's software is much more user friendly and has nice features.
Physical system:
Lyra is about twice the size, its buttons are large and on the face of the unit. Nomad's buttons are tucked away on the side and it has a nice 'hold' function which stops accidentally bumping the buttons. Lyra uses AA batteries, Nomad uses AAA, but has two rechargables which it recharges automatically when plugged into to computer. I dont know if it's bad to transfer files with normal batteries in the player.
Functionality:
This is where Nomad cleans up. Being able to scan through 10 preset stations quickly lets you vary music a lot more by listening to mp3's only when there's nothing good on. Also, I've found the recorder to be very useful. The other big difference is in Lyra's terrible lag in starting up, which gets very annoying.
Data storage:
If you're going to look into buying more expansion cards, look into the cost, since they use different systems.
Overall, if you are familiar with computers, the Nomad should be easy enough to use and its added bonusses, as well as Lyras problems, make it preferable.
