| cypher417's Full Review: Sony MC-P10 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
I bought this even though I knew it was above average price for a 64Mb player. The software installed easily and everything is easy to use. The problem (at first) was that it didn't technically play MP3 files. You are required to convert your files to a SDMI compliant version of MP3 or ATRAC3 that can only be used from the computer that transferred it (Sony has a record label so I can understand this). The software has a stupid check-in/check-out procedure that you get use to. I hated it until I found that the ATRAC3 (a form of mini-disk compression) actually sounds better than MP3 encoded at the same rate. I can store 20 songs at the second highest quality or 30 at the third highest. 30 songs is the maximum for good quality playback. There is actually only 60Mb of storage because the firmware takes up 4Mb, but that is still at least as much as competing players that cost almost as much. Other players have to use MP3 at higher bitrates to sound just as good and as a result can't hold as many songs. It isn't upgradable with removable storage, but how many people actually mess with buying tiny expensive smart media cards for the other players. The 3 EQ presets sound good, but I usually keep it on Rock for extra base unless I have it hooked into the car. Battery life is easily 4+ hours and I use NiMH batteries without any problems. I have an early model that Sony says has an overheating problem when using certain NiMH batteries, but I haven't had problems. They will fix it for free anyway if there is one. The CLIP on it can't really clip on anything and should be bigger. It does have a neck strap that works well and the headphones have a shorter cord to make things easier. The only reason I don't use it anymore is I just bought a Nomad Jukebox. I will still prefer to use it on float/camp trips for its size and solid state durability.
This is as easy to use as it gets. Beginners should have no trouble and it's small enough to hide under a shirt/tie at work.
