When we moved to Cincinnati I was very excited to hook up the cable, being the TVaholic that I am. Living in Columbus, I had Time Warner Cable, and figured in a big city like Cincinnati, I would be able to have the same, or at least a choice. Wrongo! Adelphia, for some reason, services Delhi, which is the township I live in. They also service Northern Kentucky. Why they chose my little township, and not Bridgetown, which is about 3 streets away, is beyond me, but we got blessed....
Setup was relatively easy, but I was quite disappointed with the product. The service man was prompt, and even managed to bring cable to our bedroom. I ran into a few problems with the reception, but that cleared up shortly, and I was on my way to happy cable surfing.
With the basic Adelphia service, you pay for your basic channels. You know, the usual...ABC, NBC, PBS, CBS, and not much more. For that, it's around $15.00. Then, you can add the family package for $20.00 more dollars. This adds MTV, Disney, ESPN, Nick, and channels like that. There's around 50 in all. Then, we also added HBO/Cinemax. This was, I believe, another $15.00. Then, of course, you pay for the box, the remote, and all that good stuff. Altogether, our bill comes to around $55.00.
Up until recently, Adelphia has been a little behind in the cable technology race. They didn't have any onscreen guide, or even any information on the show you were watching. You had to turn to Channel 50 to get the TV Guide, and that only gave you what was on for the next hour and a half. Not the most convenient thing, especially being used to Time Warner, which gave you up to a three day schedule at the click of a remote.
I've also noticed that the cable goes out or gets fuzzy once a month. It usually doesn't happen to the basic channels, but the "premium" channels do tend to go out on me. This can be especially frustrating if you are in the middle of a movie or an exciting part of "The Real World". It's a pretty regular thing, so I'm not sure what's up with that. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one though, because when I called to complain, the lines were all busy, and I waiting over 15 minutes with no answer. I finally gave up...
Then, last month, I got the call I was waiting for. Adelphia went digital, and they were lowering the prices! For about $2.50 more a month, they would upgrade me to their digital cable, which would give me everything Time Warner has had for years. Gee, thanks..... But, since switching was free, and the price was good forever, I signed up.
Well, we had to take in the old box, and get the new one. I guess part of the free switch was the fact that we have to hook it up ourselves. I just want to let everyone know that I managed to do it myself, after my husband tried and failed! *giggle* It really wasn't too difficult. They give you a book that has diagrams to follow.
Unfortunately, the lady put batteries in the new remote, and they were dead. And they weren't even the ones in the old remote! Nice, eh? The remote is a lot more complicated than the old one. And the new cable box is about twice the size! It's huge and heavy. I guess all that new technology takes up a lot of space.
So far, everything is great. I get all the channels I'm supposed to, which is now up to about 75. They've added more sports channels, the Game Show Network, and HBO Family. There's a whole slew of new Discovery channels too, which is pretty nice. I love the online guide, and I can even get info on the shows I'm watching. It is all pretty user friendly, once you figure out what each button does.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with the change. Time will only tell if the cable blackouts will continue, but what can I do? Even though Time Warner is right down the street, Adelphia has a monopoly on my street. Thank goodness they've gone digital....now if only they would add a internet service like Roadrunner...Well, a woman can dream, can't she?
