Lately I discovered that I’m having no such luck with my usual household services since I moved back into a small apartment. I was having phone problems (that will be a later epinion), a roach infestation, and basically my college was giving me a hard time about changing my major which I requested they do last semester. When it came time to order cable, I thought it would be NO problem…boy I was so dang wrong.
Adelphia (the cable service formally known as Century) happens to be the only game in town. As much as I love the snow on the TV, I gave in to my frustration and called Adelphia.
The Scenario
Before I moved out of my apartment for the summer, I told Adelphia to disconnect my cable because I doubt I could afford their hefty 42 dollar a month price for cable I would not even watch. They agreed to disconnect the cable and give me a refund for the month.
After 3 months
After 3 months, I decided to hook up the TV watch some of the boob tube. Low and behold…I STILL HAD CABLE! Being the concerned consumer that I was, I decided to call Adelphia and ask them “What the Hell?” After waiting a thousand years on the telephone I finally got an answer. The operator basically said “Since it is for Free, Enjoy it while you have it”…Now, this kinda didn’t settle in my stomach well, if I was caught with this “free cable” I could be fined a bunch of money (more than just paying cable). So I decided just to ignore the advice and order cable.
So I called them up again, waiting another thousand years…and finally ordered cable. I took their special which was if I ordered premium service I would not have to pay the installation fee. As this was boiling into my brain, it would end up cheaper than just paying the installation fee plus! I really had a thing for HBO. I asked the operator if I ordered HBO would I get HBO plus or HBO signature. She said NO so I became reluctant but ordered it anyway.
The Day the Cable Came
I decided to schedule our Cable date on a Wednesday between 1-3…mainly because those were the only times me and my roommate did not have a class. The cable guy finally did come at 2:30 (I was gone at this time so this is what my roommate told me). He fixed all the fuzz on the picture and then said “I’ll call you back and bring you your box SOON”. Well, when I came home around 3:00 and waited till 7:00 soon came and went. We waited the NEXT day and about 4:00 we became impatient. I called Adelphia up (it isn’t the local office it’s the NATIONAL office) and told them the whole scenario. The operator then said “well, he left no notes indicating about a box”. Then he said “He probably came with the wrong equipment yada yada”. The Adelphia operator then told me to probably head to the local office and retrieve the box from them.
So of course, I had to drop everything that I was doing and go to the office to demand my box. Now, it usually takes around 10-20 minutes to program a box to give HBO…but waiting in that office seemed like an eternity.
FINALLY WE HAVE CABLE
Finally I had the box in my hands and now I have to figure out where to hook it up. It really didn’t take long to hook up the box, it took really long on how to program it. The box is basically very old and when I plug my TV in the back and turn on the box…nothing really happens. But, I can’t complain! I finally have cable. I switched through the channels and discovered “HEY I DO GET HBO PLUS AND SIGNATURE”. Well that operator was filled with crock!
Summary of Thoughts
Adelphia was the most bothersome thing in the whole world. What I thought was going to be simple ended up being a pain in the a$$! Not only was the service beyond terrible but they repeatedly told me things that were contradictory. If they did everything right the first time maybe I wouldn’t need to call them 300 times and go to the office and pick up my box then. Adelphia in NM doesn’t even have any DIGITAL CABLE! Back upstate I could get digital cable + all the STARZ channels for only 38 bucks. While extended basic cable + HBO channels cost me around 58 something. Overpriced for nothing! Basically I have no other choice and have to stay with Adelphia…WHAT A RIP OFF!
