Life has pretty much always been as I know it. I remember stepping out of my front door when I was in Kindergarten, and my mom pointing up to the sky. "Look, Margaret. They are putting Cable Television on our street." I didn't understand what she meant that day, nor did any of the other children on my street who noticed the men putting up new wires. I soon was the first child on my street to catch on, as my mom ordered cable service that day.
Everything has been fine since that day. I've had seventeen years of MTV and sitcoms to raise me well. I have also had the supliment of AOL since I was twelve. So seventeen years of cable and ten years of AOL and the internet. I had really gotten used to my life and my stale technology, until the day we went digital.
Charter, who is our local cable provider was advertising a special. You could hook up to cable television, and get a digital internet provider for only $99.00 a month. Ok, so that is a lot of money. But, cable television runs about $70.00 a month in this area, and AOL is $19.95 a month. Now, that is $85.00 a month, and for only $14 more, you can go DIGITAL.
Ok, for those of you who are not yet digital, let me explain what it is. We went from having 65, or so television channels, to having hundreds. Yes, that is a wonderful thing, but it gets better. You know that channel which tells you the time, all of the shows that are playing and the station they are on? Do you know how you always just miss seeing what is on the channel you wanted to see, or it's stuck up in all the pay-per-view channels which you don't get anyway? Well, you don't need that channel any more. With digital cable, the information of the station, the program and a synopsis of the program are all posted at the bottom of the screen when you first click onto a channel. That's the coolest thing ever!
We now get all of the movie channels and the DMX (digital music express). For me, this has been wonderful. I almost completely stopped watching network televion. I watch the movies on all of the HBOs, Cinemaxes and Showtimes. When I want music, there are several different MTVs and VH1s to choose from. When I just want background music, there is DMX, where there are endless selections of music, based on whatever your particular liking is.
And now that we have our computer hooked up by cable, signing on takes seconds instead of minutes. I can download from Napster at a rate of about one song in every two-three minutes (it used to take at least thirty minutes). Everything is wonderful now. I couldn't be more happier with our decision to go DIGITAL
