A Short Extension Cord with a Few Perks from GE
Written: Mar 2, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:safety guards over outlets, three outlets, polarized, 6-foot length is good, affordable
Cons:not everyone will like the white color
The Bottom Line: This GE Indoor Polarized Extension Cord is serving a dual purpose … plus it has safety features.
I needed a short extension cord to use in the living room. This GE Indoor Polarized Extension Cord with Tamper Guard, 6-feet (model # 51937) offered not only what I needed, but included something I didn’t even think of.
Description
A cardboard sleeve covers this 6-foot long white extension cord. This is a polarized plug, meaning that one of the two plug blades is wider than the other. The cord has three outlets, one on one side, and two outlets on the other side. All three outlets have Tamper Guard rotary safety covers.
The Maximum Amps are 13. Maximum Volts are 125. Maximum Watts are 1625. This cord is 2 wire / 16 gauge (SPT-2, 2-Conductor 16AWG).
My Experiences
I originally purchased this cord to use as an extension cord when recharging my father’s Kindle e-book reader. He has the habit of not turning the Kindle off, and then finds himself out of battery power. Plugging the Kindle charging cord directly into the wall leaves the cord a bit short for him to read in his chair while the Kindle is charging. At first I was hesitant to plug the Kindle charging cord into this extension cord, but we’ve been recharging the Kindle this way for a while, and it is working well. The GE 6-foot extension cord gives that extra bit of play so that he can comfortably sit in his chair and read.
Later, he realized that this cord is the perfect length to plug his Casio keyboard into. Again, he needed that bit of extra play this extension cord offers. So it’s great the cord is serving a dual purpose. Also, I never leave devices plugged into this extension cord. Once we are finished with it, I make sure to unplug everything and store the cord in a dry location.
At the time I bought the cord, I didn’t realize it came with Tamper Guards. Since we have a toddler who sometimes visits, those safety guards are a welcome addition. Essentially, each “guard” is a rotating circle over the extension cord outlets. Turn the circle one way to open the plug ports. Rotate the circle to the other way to block the plug ports so that nothing can be inserted into them. All three outlets on the extension cord have the Tamper Guards. This is an excellent safety feature.
Note that this extension cord only has two prongs and is polarized (one prong blade wider than the other). It is not a three-prong grounded plug.
Purchasing
Staples.com sells this extension cord for $4.99 each. I bought this at my local pharmacy on sale for about $2.00.
Summary
I am very pleased with this GE extension cord. The 6-foot length works perfectly for our needs, and it was an affordable purchase. I would buy another one.
I hope you found this review useful.
