Hot Dog is a major cheer in our Osage County First Grade classroom.  The first book read, is a major achievement.  Working through a particularly knotty problem;, writing a whole page without a single reversal for the child who is struggling with the problem, and the like; are all Hot Dog moments.  The first Hot Dog of the school term is rewarded with a dog of choice.  Because Mrs. M has a dachshund at her house and the classroom holds a number of dachsie centered items including puppets, books and the like; the dachsie award is especially popular.

I like the approach of the Paper Magic Group who state my own feeling about the classroom – the classroom should be a fun and welcoming place.  Can’t agree more.

I like a classroom in which discipline is instructional rather than merely punitive, while there are consequences for down and rebellious, willful misbehavior, most silliness exhibited kids, in my own opinion is just that, silliness, and I’m not at all surprised the 6 year olds act pretty much as 6 year olds.  Ignoring silliness, or quiet reminders, and rewarding appropriate is more conducive to learning atmosphere, works and finds Little Learners working hard, learning and achieving goals.
